Chord chart by
John in South Jersey
[Note:
When I was asked on the Cabinessence message board to do a chart for the chords
to this song, I was delighted by the request.
And the reason I gave was that, in my opinion, this song signals a
turning point in terms of Brians compositional style. On one level, the chords
are pretty simple. But its not the chords as much as how they are paired and
glued together, particularly in the bridge.
They give a glimpse of the magnificent songs that were still yet to come
at the time this song was written (March 1964, charted October 1964). Another
song that Brian reportedly wrote during the same month Girls On The Beach -
also reflects his growth as a song writer, employing more challenging and
sometimes unexpected chord and key changes.]

LH: D G D Bb

[Note:
Play the F chord in the second inversion, the Bb chord in the third
inversion. Yes, it makes a Gm7 chord.
But leave the G root note out of the RH.
Just play it as a Bb chord in the RH, over a G bass note in the LH. See if you can find other places in this and
other songs where Brian factors out the notes of his minor seventh chords
between LH and RH in this manner. Theres so many]

We went together for so long-------
[The
first four Bridge chords are broken down into notes for you below. The first
two chords equate to a Dm7 followed by a G7-9. Notice how the top high harmony
holds the F note throughout, while the middle harmony note moves ever so
slightly -- down one half-step in the second chord, up one whole step in the
fourth chord. But the overall effect when these chord voicings are played or
sung over the bass notes (which by the way appear nowhere in the first three RH
chords) makes such a difference in how the chords sound to your ear. Give a listen to some classical superstars
like Claude Debussy (Impressionist school) and Sergei Rachmaninoff (Romantic
school) and see if you can pick out where they also employ this little one
small step for a note, one giant leap for chord progressions trick in some of
their tunes, albeit on a grander scale.]
